A second earthquake in less than a week jolted parts of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday, with a 2.7-magnitude tremor recorded in New Jerseys Hillsdale area just after noon.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck over 7 miles beneath the surface.

Tremors may have been felt in parts of New York City," NYC Emergency Management wrote on X.

Tremors may have been felt in some parts of New York City, according to NYC Emergency Management, which said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with partner agencies for any potential impacts.

The latest quake comes just days after a similar seismic event was reported in the region.

On Saturday night, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake had hit Hasbrouck Heights in New Jersey, located north of Newark and about 21 km from Midtown Manhattan. That quake had occurred around 10:18 pm and was felt across all five boroughs of New York City.

Authorities have so far reported no damage or injuries from either incident, but the USGS has urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks, which can follow minutes, hours, or even days after the initial tremor.

If you felt shaking, check for any shifted items, fallen debris, or cracks. No immediate protective action is required unless you notice damage," the USGS said in a statement.

Where Do Earthquakes Happen in the US?

The United States has several active seismic zones, the most prominent being the West Coast, particularly California, which sits on the San Andreas Fault. Other high-risk zones include parts of Alaska, Nevada, Utah and the Pacific Northwest. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, which affects parts of the Midwest and the Charleston area in South Carolina, are also known for historic quakes.

How Close Is New York To Any Seismic Zone?

While New York is not located in a high-risk seismic zone like California, it lies within what is considered a moderate seismic risk area. The region falls under the influence of the Ramapo Fault Zone, which stretches through parts of New Jersey and upstate New York.
