ACCRA, Nigeria Ghana is in mourning following the deaths of Defence Minister Edward Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Mohammed, who were among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the countrys Ashanti Region.
The Z-9 helicopter, operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, lost contact during a flight from the capital Accra to the mining town of Obuasi.
The aircraft was carrying five passengers and three crew members when it went down in a remote area in the south of the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, confirmed the crash and the identities of those killed.
He announced that flags will fly at half-mast nationwide in honour of the deceased.
The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country, the statement read.
While the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, rescue and investigation teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site after the helicopter was reported missing.
The wreckage was located late in the day, with no survivors found.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the West African nation, prompting an outpouring of grief from political leaders, military officials, and citizens alike.
