Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has thrown her full support behind NACADAs recent proposals aimed at tightening alcohol regulations, arguing that the pushback likely comes from individuals profiting off underage drinking.
Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Elachi questioned the outrage over rules designed to protect the public, especially vulnerable youth. She urged Kenyans to embrace reforms that promote health and safety.
I support the regulations. Let us agree that there are some areas we have to close in on in terms of how one gets access to alcohol. I dont know why in Africa, where we have more problems, is where we fight against everything that can secure us. Let us just do like it is in Europe, she said.
Elachi stressed the importance of enforcing age verification, comparing Kenyas lax approach to stricter systems abroad.
In Europe, you need an ID to show your age; here, we will lie so that you get alcohol; thats the problem. Anyone complaining here means they normally sell to children.
Her remarks come as NACADA continues to rally support for policies that curb underage alcohol consumption and reduce addiction-related harm across the country.
