C Spencer has secured a £28.6m contract to deliver a new-build railway station at Waterbeach for Cambridgeshire County Council.

The construction engineering contractor was appointed following a two-bid competition under a restricted procurement process, the council said in a 6 August notice.

The design-and-build job was let under the NEC Option A form.

Waterbeach Station is being relocated as part of a broader plan to build 4,500 new homes. Planning permission is dependent on opening a new railway station on the Cambridge-Ely route, according to the Greater Cambridge Partnership.

The new station will include two platforms, an accessible footbridge, a 200-space car park, taxi and bus drop-off areas, cycle storage, and public realm. A new access road will be constructed from Cody Road.

The existing Waterbeach facility will be decommissioned and demolished. The relocated station will be operated by Govia Thameslink Railway, trading as Great Northern, and is intended to be transferred to Network Rail on completion.

Cambridgeshire County Council will operate and maintain the highway and parking infrastructure.

Preliminary design work was completed by WSP, with Sable Leigh Consultancy acting as project manager and client representative on behalf of the Greater Cambridge Partnership.

Volker Fitzpatrick was previously involved in early contractor engagement.

The contract value excludes VAT.

Social value accounted for 5 per cent of the award criteria, with quality weighted at 60 per cent and price at 35 per cent.
